Install Scribus in Ubuntu 20.04 LTS

Scribus is a Desktop publishing application (in short DTP). It is written in C++ with user interface based on Qt framework. Furthermore, it is a free and open-source cross-platform application. In this article, we would discuss how to install Scribus in Ubuntu 20.04 LTS release.

Scribus was first released on June 26, 2003. And, at the time of writing the article, version 1.5.5 is available through standard Ubuntu repository. During initial days, Desktop publishing software helped a great deal to print publications. But, with the advent of internet, now Desktop publishing applications can also be used for creating content of e-books, magazines, newsletters, posters, brochures etc.

Note: Following operations would require you to have superuser privileges. In case you don’t have one, then contact your System Administrator for assistance.

Install Scribus in Ubuntu 20.04 LTS

Since, the package is already available in standard Ubuntu repository. Therefore, we need to update the repository. This ensures we get the latest version of the package. Hence, issue the following in terminal –

sudo apt update

Next, to install Scribus and related dependencies (if any) –

sudo apt install scribus

Lastly, we can access the application either from our System’s main menu or terminal (type scribus to launch the application).

Documentation – If you intend to use any application for the first time. Then, as far as possible make sure you read its manual. It would at least help us get an idea of how things work within our application.

Fortunately, we have the documentation package of Scribus available in standard Ubuntu repository. Therefore, issue the following in terminal –

sudo apt install scribus-doc

The package size is of approximately 50 MBs. Launch the Scribus application after we install the documentation package. Thereafter, either press F1 to get Scribus manual or Click on Help drop-down menu in Menu bar –> and Click Scribus Manual.
