Chromium is an open-source browser project. Its source code forms the base of many browsers like Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge and Opera. It was first released on September 02, 2008. In this article, we would discuss how to install Chromium in Ubuntu 22.04 release.
Earlier, we could install the package through standard Ubuntu repository. Although, a transitional package chromium-browser is available. But, it installs the package through snap. At the time of writing v98.0.4758.102 is available to install through snap.
This article deals with Chromium browser installation through snap.
Note: Following operations would require you to have superuser privileges. In case you don’t have one then, we advise you to contact your System Administrator for assistance.
Install Chromium in Ubuntu 22.04
Here, in the Section I – we will focus on snap package installation. If you already have snap installed, then you may skip Section I.
Section I. You can check whether you have snap installed or not through following commands –
snap version
If its installed then, it would return with the version numbers.
snap 2.53.4 snapd 2.53.4
If its not, then we recommend you to update the standard Ubuntu repository first. Open a terminal and issue the following –
sudo apt update
Next, to install snapd –
sudo apt install snapd
Section II. Now, we can install Chromium web browser using snap by issuing following command in a terminal –
sudo snap install chromium
Lastly, to launch the application through a terminal –
chromium
